How to Love Your Skin: 5 Confidence Tips for Skin Positivity

At Mazillo, we’re committed to busting beauty myths and empowering you to love the skin you’re in. But we know it’s not always that easy. Whether it’s the weather, stress, or hormones, sometimes unavoidable things can cause not-so-fun spots and blemishes to show up. To help you care for your skin through thick and thin, here are 5 top tips.

The skin positivity movement

It’s not just us telling you to love your skin – there’s a whole social media movement cheering you on! Over the past few years, the trend ‘skin positivity’ has advocated celebrating your natural skin, in whatever condition it’s in.

It started when Vlogger Em Ford shared a video revealing all the negative comments she received about her acne, called You Look Disgusting. Quickly the video went viral and sparked conversations around skin shaming. It inspired celebrities and everyday people alike to share their natural skin online, baring their acne, wrinkles, blemishes, and scars for all to see.

Like its big sister movement, body positivity, skin positivity still has a way to go.  A 2020 review of 42 studies in the American Academy of Dermatology showed a significant link between acne and depression. In a social media world infamous for airbrushing and editing, it’s safe to say it can be a self-esteem destroyer for those who don’t meet its impossible standard.

That’s why skin positivity is an important movement to be taking place. Skin has texture, and now we’re finally seeing that reflected online.

5 skin-positive tips

Now you know what skin positivity is, let’s look at ways you can bring the social media trend into your life:

  1.     Go makeup free (somewhere you normally cake it on)

We all know a makeup-free day is good for your skin. It means more oxygen gets to your face, your pores breathe, and your skin can repair and regenerate itself. The ultimate confidence challenge, though, is to go makeup-free somewhere you usually like to layer it up.

Take the lead from Melisa Raouf, for example, the first Miss England contest to go make-up free in the pageant’s 94-year history. Most of us won’t be on the runway anytime soon, but a shopping day, night out, or a day at the office, are great places to give it a go. Keep your head up tall and be proud to rock up exactly as you are.

If you need some assistance to love your skin without makeup, a nourishing skincare product can do the trick. Packed with vitamins and antioxidants, our Facial Oil will leave you with an all-day healthy-looking glow.

When you do want to return to your makeup kit, think of it as a creative and fun activity – rather than a chore to cover up your ‘imperfections’.

  1.     Age with grace and embrace it!

Beautiful doesn’t mean young, even if the media has drilled it into us. Forget the idea that women are supposed to fear birthdays and hide away whenever they spot a wrinkle. Gorgeous, well-looked-after, and glowing skin doesn’t have an age limit.

Be radical and embrace the signs of life that show up on your skin. Use your skincare routine to care for and protect them, rather than to ‘fix’ them. Our  Samodiva Ethereal Youth™ range, for example, contains plant stem cells that visibly repair and rejuvenate skin that has been exposed to harmful environmental factors over time.

As fashion designed Diane Von Furstenberg says

Aging is out of your control. How you handle it, though, is in your hands … In my older face, I see my life. Every wrinkle, every smile line, every age spot… My face carries all my memories. Why should I erase them?

The aim isn’t to turn back the clocks, but to protect and love your skin as you grow and glow into the future.

  1.     Keep your standards sky-high

Whether it’s relationships, jobs, or the products you use on your skin, take this one piece of advice: don’t settle. One of the best ways to boost your confidence and show yourself love is to keep your standards sky high and only let the best have access to you.

When you’re struggling with spots it can be tempting to pick and pop, pile on different chemicals, and scrub like there’s no tomorrow. Layering on heavy-duty products, without really thinking about what they are, isn’t the way to show your skin you care. Cheap, synthetic ingredients might even irritate and make the problem worse.

Instead, be selective. Go for quality over quantity. Look for natural, active ingredients, that target your specific skin needs.

  1.     Audit your Instagram feed

As the old saying goes, ‘comparison is the thief of joy’. And Instagram is a breeding ground for self-comparison.

If your feed is full of young, smooth-skinned, and (probably) photoshopped faces, try adding a bit of diversity to your grid. Follow influencers who look like you. Add people of different ages, ethnicities, and skin types too. Make your grid a celebration of beautiful faces, rather than a shrine to an outdated beauty standard.

If you’re looking for some skin-positive influencers to add, here are a few to start with:

  • Sofia Grahn - @ISOFIAGRAHN
  • Ella Gorton - @_MYSKINSTORY
  • Anjali Mahto - @ANJALIMAHTO
  • Kadeeja Sel Khan - @EMERALDXBEAUTY
  • Lou Northcote - @LOUNORTHCOTE
  1.     Quit chasing perfection

Admittedly, this one is easier said than done, especially when everyone seems to strive for one ‘ideal’ skin type. That’s why shifting your mindset from skincare to change your skin, to skincare to love your skin, is such a liberating move.

At Mazillo, we know skin care is more than skin deep. It’s time you can take out of your day to slow down, practice self-love, and change the way you feel about yourself, inside and out. That’s why our products fit into a 5-step routine, so you have a ready-made practice to boost your confidence every day.
