Can you believe it’s January already? It’s time to set yourself up for a successful new year. As a 100% natural, cruelty-free, and vegan skincare brand, we think Veganuary skincare is the way to go.

By committing to using plant-based beauty for January, you’ll be helping the planet, animals, and, of course, your skin. Even better? We’ve made it super simple in this quick guide.

Ready to make 2023 your kindest year yet?

When did Veganuary start, and what is it?

First things first, what is this Veganuary everyone’s talking about?

Well, as the name suggests, it’s trying veganism for the month of January. The challenge was created in the UK in 2014 by a non-profit that provides guides, recipes, and different ways to get involved.

Fast forward a few years, and the campaign inspired and supported over 620,000 people in 2022, with participants from over 220 countries and territories. The campaign mainly focuses on food, but a vegan lifestyle extends well beyond your dinner plate.

Whether you want to take your 2022 plant-based pledge to a new level, or you’re not quite ready to give up your favourite snacks, you can give Veganuary skincare a go. By upgrading your beauty routine you’ll be well on your way to a kinder 2023.

Now, what makes skincare vegan …

What is vegan skincare?

We dive into the ins and outs of what makes a skincare product 100% plant-based in our ethical, vegan, and cruelty-free skincare guide. Put simply, it’s any skincare product that contains 0 animal-derived ingredients.

Is vegan skincare better?

At Mazillo, we take a holistic approach when it comes to our ethics. We do our best to be kind to the planet, all its living creatures, and, of course, your skin.  It’s these three factors that make vegan skincare the best choice.

By now, you’ve likely seen or heard horror stories about the treatment of farm animals. By choosing vegan skincare and beauty products, you’re staying well away from these scary scenes. And, as most vegan products are also cruelty-free, you’re refusing to support unethical experiments.

As for the planet, the UN reports that animal farming contributes the most to global warming and as much as 30% of all land is used for raising agricultural animals. The less demand for animal products (yes, even in skincare) then, over time, the less animal farming will be required.

Closer to home, choosing vegan skincare products may be kinder to your skin too. Products, such as Mazillo’s, that are nutrient-dense with plant-derived ingredients mean that less harsh synthetics are slathered onto your skin.

Talking about vegan products, it’s time to create a kind, caring, and plant-based beauty routine…

5 step Veganuary skincare routine

Let’s look at some animal ingredients snuck into skincare products, and how natural alternatives can do the job just as well, if not better!

  1.     For clear skin…

You might find Oestrogen in some non-vegan cleansers. This hormone is often extracted from the urine of pregnant horses (we’re serious!) and is used as a sebum-balancing agent.

Fortunately, there are other routes to clear skin.  We prefer natural ingredients, such as Apricot Kernal oil and Grape Seed Oil, for their acne-fighting properties. Beautiful botanical sounds much better, right?

  1.     For even skin…

Known for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, lactoferrin is a protein commonly derived from cows’ milk, salvia, tears, mucus, and bile.

For even skin, we instead extract plant stem cells like the ones from Calendula flowers,  which have outstanding skin regeneration and smoothing properties.

  1.     For a smooth texture…

You love the pampering feel of our Face Mask. As one lovely customer says,

you can instantly feel how nourishing the formula is on the skin. This is definitely a mask that you can feel working.

We’re proud to create this gorgeous texture without any fillers, just pure active ingredients.

Sadly, a lot of skincare products can’t say the same. Glycerin, a compound obtained from animal fats, is the second most used skincare ingredient after water.

  1.     For soft skin…

When it comes to silky smooth skin, Anolin, aka sheep sweat, is one ingredient to avoid. Luckily, we use local ingredients such as Orpheus flower stem cells in our moisturiser, which deeply hydrate the skin.

  1.       For youthful skin…

Finally, we want to warn you about the much-celebrated collagen. This protein is derived from animal waste such as tissue, bone, skin, and ligaments, and is used for its anti-aging potential.

We use natural plant oils, such as Rosehip oil, which stimulates the natural collagen synthesis that keeps you looking youthful.
