Maintain your glowing complexion after a day in the cold with our natural skincare steps. Our nourishing products and at-home remedies will help you combat dryness and flakiness, so you can embrace the cold season with confidence.
Summer skincare was all about basking in the golden glow, without damaging our skin. Then came Autumn skincare, where we had to calm our skin amid the changing climate. Now, winter is almost here and it’s time to tweak our routine once again!
Along with the cozy sweaters and hot beverages, cold weather brings a common skincare challenge: dry, dull, and flaky skin. But don’t worry, just like the seasons gone before, in this winter guide, we’ve got the natural skincare steps you need to keep your skin radiant.
When the temperature drops, our skin loses moisture, and harsh winds strip away its natural oils. To combat these effects and achieve a radiant glow, you can opt for natural skincare products that will nourish and protect your skin, leaving it soft, supple, and radiant.
From gentle exfoliation to the right moisturisers and masks, our winter guide has got you covered. We will delve into the steps you should prioritise, as well as the benefits of at-home remedies.

How cold weather affects your skin
Ever gone on a crisp winter walk and felt your skin become dry and tight? Or noticed that when you go back inside and get all cosy with a cuppa, it starts to feel red and itchy?
You’re not alone! Research has shown that the drop in temperature and humidity levels in winter results in less moisture in the skin and fewer lipids in the skin barrier compared to summer. Since moisture is essential for healthy skin, this can result in dryness and flakiness.
Not to mention harsh winds, that strip away moisture and cause additional redness, and indoor heating systems, that reduce humidity in the air and make it harder for our skin to retain moisture.
As a result, your skin may feel rough, flaky, and uncomfortable, especially if you already have a sensitive skin type.
Don’t let dry skin add to the winter blues though – there are plenty of things you can do to stay radiant for the festive season!
Quick tips for winter skin
These quick tips will help you set the right environment for healthy winter skin:
- Always keep a water bottle or hot drink to hand, to hydrate from the inside out.
- Invest in a humidifier to add moisture to the air when you’re at home.
- Avoid overly long and hot showers as dermatologists say they can irritate dry skin.
3 key skincare steps to prioritise in winter
As always, your natural skincare routine should focus on a high-quality cleanser, toner, moisturiser, and SPF (even when the sun is hidden!). But when the trees have lost their leaves and we’re well and truly in winter, you’ll want to give these 4 steps extra attention:
- Calming cleanse
If you have an oilier skin type in the summer, you might use a harsher cleanser to try and combat this. In winter, you’ll need to rethink the products you use.
Since the skin is likely drier in colder temperatures, you want to avoid cleansers that strip away the skin’s natural oils. Look for mild, non-foaming cleansers that maintain the skin’s natural oils and protective barrier.
Our skincare secret:
We like using an oil-based cleanser all year round, but especially in winter. Our Gentle Cleansing Oil is formulated with 11 lightweight nourishing oils, and effectively removes the build-up of dirt and excess oil, whilst leaving your skin soft and dewy.
- Deep hydration
The key to keeping your skin radiant in winter is to moisturise it thoroughly. Forget a small dab of a light moisturiser…it’s time for deep hydration now!
Try using a range of nourishing products, such as:
- A facial oil (once or twice daily)
- A replenishing moisturiser (twice daily)
- A face mask (once or twice weekly)
Look for products that are rich in natural oils, like rosehip, hemp seed, apricot kernel, or tomato seed oil (you can see our cold pressed oils here). These oils penetrate deep into the skin, providing intense hydration that will help your skin retain its moisture against the cold.
Our skincare secret:
Our Replenishing Moisturiser contains stem cells from the rare Orpheus Flower, which facilitates the skin’s natural regeneration. This magic ingredient has been found to lead to an 11% increase in hydration after 4 weeks of use!
For an added dose of hydration, combine it with 2-3 drops of our Facial Oil.
- Routine exfoliation
While you might have skipped this step in summer, exfoliating your skin in winter is crucial to remove dead skin cells (aka the flaky bits!) and allow better absorption of moisturisers.
That said, it's important to be kind to your skin and choose an exfoliant that won’t strip away essential oils. Use a gentle exfoliant that contains natural ingredients like sugar or finely ground oats, or create one yourself by mixing these ingredients with honey or yoghourt for a nourishing scrub.
After cleansing, massage the exfoliant onto damp skin in circular motions, focusing on areas prone to dryness. Rinse thoroughly, pat your skin dry, and repeat two or three times a week.
At-home ingredients for colder months
Although we love using innovative ingredients, we also believe in the power of ingredients you can find at home. When it comes to winter skin, you might want to try these at-home remedies too:
- Chamomile tea: known for its soothing properties, Chamomile tea helps reduce redness and inflammation, perfect for dry and irritated skin.
- Oats: finely ground oats are natural exfoliants that help to remove dead skin cells while being gentle on dry skin.
- Aloe vera: Although you may associate it with sunburn, aloe vera can be used in winter to help soothe irritated skin.
